Cold Water Army Temperance Society Glass
16oz pint glass with Mission Houses logo and Cold Water Army Temperance Society logo.
Temperance societies were popular throughout New England and brought to Hawai’i by the missionaries. This logo represents the “Cold Water Army” society. They advocated only drinking cold water. Some of the Ali’i were skeptical of the temperance movement but some accepted and endorsed the policy. The temperance movement remained a part of the social and political fabric of Hawai’i but none of the movements ever completely stopped the sale, distribution or consumption of alcohol.
